„The Challenge That Became My Purpose – Finding Light in Darkness“
– Lyn, Founder MyHorizonWithin
Life has a way of testing us in ways we never imagined. I have walked through unimaginable loss – pregnancy after pregnancy, each one shattering my heart and leaving me questioning everything. When I finally carried a pregnancy further, I held on to hope, believing with all my heart that this time, things would be different. But then came the complications and after weeks in the hospital, I had to deliver my baby far too soon. The days that followed were a battle between hope and heartbreak. As my baby fought for his life in the NICU, I faced a battle of my own. I suffered a pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening condition that left me gravely ill. I barely had the strength to hold on, but I kept praying and believing. While I was still recovering, my baby developed complications. He had to undergo two surgeries within two weeks, and despite fighting so bravely, he did not survive the second surgery.
Grief consumed me. I sank into a depression, developed fear, anxiety and became a shadow of myself. Sadness was written all over me. I no longer recognized myself every time I looked into the mirror. And then, there was the shame surrounding miscarriage and child loss – a stigma we don’t talk about. I felt ashamed, afraid of being judged or having people wonder what was wrong with me.The light in my life dimmed and everything felt overwhelming. But in that deepest darkness, I found something that carried me forward – faith, gratitude and the ability to see light, even in the smallest of moments.
Finding Strength Through Faith and Music
At my lowest, I wrestled with my faith. I questioned God, struggled to understand why I had to endure so much pain and felt distant from Him. But even when I turned away, He never left. Slowly, I found my way back – not through dramatic revelations, but through quiet moments of grace. Some days, it was a prayer whispered through tears. Other days, it was a song that touched my heart when words failed me.
Listening to soul-stirring worship songs by Charity Gayle and Shalom by Bridge Worship strengthened my faith, filling my heart with comfort and hope reminding me that even in sorrow, I was not alone. Each lyric, each melody, felt like God speaking directly to my heart, wrapping me in comfort when I needed it most. I also found daily encouragement through The YouTube Channels – Daily Jesus Devotional, Daily Jesus Prayers and the Hallelujah Challenge by Nathaniel Bassey. These daily reminders of God’s presence grounded me, helped me pray when I couldn’t find the words and reassured me that faith isn’t about having all the answers – it’s about trusting that even in brokenness, God is still holding you.
Journaling: A Path to Reflection and Healing
Journaling became my sanctuary – a safe space to release my emotions, make sense of my pain, process my grief, find moments of gratitude and rediscover my inner strength. I would journal my thoughts, prayers, Bible verses and God’s Word that I listened to, using it as a way to deepen my faith and find comfort in His presence. Each morning, I started my day with prayer and then gratitude, writing down what I was thankful for and reflecting on my blessings, no matter how small. Through journaling, I found clarity, could organize my thoughts, which ultimately helped reshape my perspective on life.
Creativity as a Form of Healing
During my time at a rehabilitation center, I discovered that healing isn’t just found in words – it’s also in movement, color and quiet moments of creation. Painting became a way to express emotions too heavy for words. Each brushstroke carried grief, pain and slowly, glimpses of hope. Knitting brought a quiet rhythm that calmed my anxious mind. Walking and physical activities gave me strength – not just physically, but emotionally as well. These simple acts weren’t just distractions; they became part of my healing, helping me find peace in the present moment and reconnect with myself.
The Power of Gratitude
Practicing gratitude became a transformative journey for me. At first, it was difficult. How could I be grateful when my heart was broken? But I learned that gratitude wasn’t about ignoring pain – it was about finding light within it. Each day, I made a choice to seek even the smallest moments to appreciate. I was deeply grateful for the five weeks I had with my baby Gabriel, for every breath he took, for the moments we shared in the NICU, for the warmth of his tiny hands in mine. I was grateful that he chose me to be his mother, even if only for a short time.
Gratitude didn’t take away my grief, but it reshaped my mindset, my heart and my healing. It allowed me to see that even in loss, there was love. Even in sorrow, there was something worth cherishing. And through gratitude, I slowly embraced hope again.
